Vine protectors are widely used in viticulture with young vines (when planting grafted rootstock or during the second year of traditional grafting) and during the first or second year of the young vine, depending on the type of pruning that is carried out at the end of the first year.
First introduced in the USA some thirteen years ago, vine protectors rapidly gained widespread acceptance worldwide.
Their success, in the majority of vineyards, is due to the many benefits they bring to the vine, namely in that they:.

1. Protect against adverse weather conditions (hail, wind, sand storms, etc.)

2. Enhance the rate of growth (due to the mini-greenhouse effect)

3. Safeguard the vine from natural predators (physical barrier)

Offer herbicide protection during weed control

4.
Are labour saving and reduce overheads.

5. Ensure a more homogenous growth, which facilitates mechanisation of the vineyard.

Over the years, various designs and materials have been used in the construction of vine protectors. Following discussions with growers and consultants, SnapMaxTM, was designed to be the most user-friendly and effective guard on the market.

Since its launch in Australia in 1995, sales have gone from strength to strength and it has gone on to achieve widespread success around the world.

Guimaraens Agrícola, exclusive distributors of SnapMaxTM in Portugal and Spain, introduced these unique vine protectors to the Portuguese market during the 1999/2000 planting season, namely in the winemaking regions of the Douro, Alentejo and Dão.

Their immediate success in the field, a combination of the unique design and results, has led to a rising demand from other regions such as the Minho, Bairrada and Algarve.
